Objects designed to belong.
Arla is a design-led studio creating sculptural lighting for contemporary living. Founded on the belief that good design should be expressive, enduring, and lived with, we create pieces that balance bold form with material honesty.
Each object is a deliberate study in reduction, geometry, tactility, and colour; designed to earn its place over time, not follow trends.
From landscape
to luminaire.
Arla is a collaboration between Jonny Hall and Jussara Bierman.
A maker at heart, Jonny’s lighting designs are shaped by thirty years of experience spanning landscape design, sculpture, and joinery. His work is informed by an architectural sensitivity and a deep connection to the South Island landscape, guiding each piece from concept to handcrafted completion.
With a background in Architecture, Jussara brings a brand lens to Arla, focusing on the intersection of identity and purpose. Together, they have built a studio that values reduction over excess, ensuring that every light produced is a deliberate study in form, clarity, and intent.
Made at the foot
of the Port Hills.
Every Arla light is designed and handcrafted in our workshop at the foot of the Port Hills in Christchurch. We work with local materials and intentional finishes, overseeing each piece from the first sketch to final assembly. This hands-on approach ensures that our integrity remains at the heart of everything we make, from our studio to your home.
Shaped by intent.
Our design process is guided by four core principles that ensure our objects earn their place in your home:
Reduction
Form follows clarity. Nothing is added without purpose. The result is design that feels effortless, balanced, and quietly bold.
Geometry
Timeless forms — triangles, cones, hexagons — reinterpreted with intent. Geometry brings harmony, proportion, and sculptural character to every piece.
Tactility
We use premium plywood to bring natural warmth indoors. Finished to invite touch and built to last, each object is made to be lived with.
Colour
Each light is spray-painted in curated tones from the Aalto range (Standard Colour Sheet). Our use of colour is joyful, restrained, and always chosen to elevate the form.
